Sometimes, You're a Stranger - Chapter 3 - Lelifey (2024)

Chapter Text

Finn felt it was best to start enacting Dot's plan off simply. A movie night is what he would suggest to Rayne and he would find a movie to watch that was at least pg-13 and not a rating lower.

So, plucking up his courage, Finn greeted Rayne when he came to tuck Finn in that night and asked, “Do you want to have a movie night with me tomorrow?”

Rayne looked up from the picture book he had just pulled out from his robes. “Yeah, that sounds fun. I think I still have your favorite movie around somewhere.”

“My favorite movie?” Finn asked, puzzled about what movie Rayne was referring to.

“Yeah, that one with all the talking appliances. What was it called, again?” Rayne tapped his fingers on the book in thought, “the little toaster that could? No, that’s the book.”

Recognition dawned on Finn and he exclaimed, “Do you mean The Brave Little Toaster?”

“Yeah, that’s the one. I’ll bring it tomorrow. You used to watch that movie back to back when you were little.”

“Uh…” Finn wasn’t sure what to say to that. He was surprised that Rayne had even remembered his favorite movie as a kid, especially when Finn himself hadn’t thought about it in years. He felt a little touched by that, but then remembers that he was supposed to be leading their binding activities towards more mature things so that Rayne would stop treating him like a child. “Actually, I already have a movie picked out. So you don’t have to bring anything.”

“Oh, alright.”

That night, Rayne took a trip back home and looked through their old boxes of movies. It took some digging, but he finally found what he was looking for. Rayne knew that Finn had said he had already picked out a movie, but maybe he would change his mind when he saw that he had actually managed to find it. At the very least, he could save it for the next movie night. Rayne tucked it into his robe and went back to the dorm.

When Rayne got back to his dorm, Max was sitting at his desk still doing some homework. “Hey,” he said, looking up from his homework. “Where have you been? You’re all covered in dust.”

“I went back to my place to look for something.”

“Oh? What?” Max was curious since Rayne didn’t talk about his home or family much. Not even Finn, who he had only started to talk about more recently. Mostly about how proud he was that Finn was improving so rapidly or what he planned to make for Finn’s lunch the next day.

“This.” Finn answered and pulled out the brave little toaster from his robe.

“A kid’s movie? What are you going to do with that?”

“Finn wants to have a movie night with me tomorrow.” Rayne put the movie on the counter and took his robe off, hitting it to loosen some dust.

“And he wanted to watch that?” Max asked doubtfully. Max had been privy to some of Rayne's ideas for binding with Finn recently and he had noticed that pretty much all of the activities were geared towards a much younger age than Finn actually was. Max wondered if Rayne was unintentionally babying Finn.

“Well, he said he already had something picked out, but I thought I’d bring it in case he changes his mind,” Rayne reasoned with a shrug.

“…alright,” Max went back to doing his homework. Hopefully, he was reading too much into things and Rayne was just enjoying some nostalgia with his brother.

The next night Finn invited Rayne into his room and greeted him with a hug. “Come in. I’ve already got everything set up.” Finn motioned towards the couch that had two bowls of popcorn set in the coffee table in front of it.

Rayne followed Finn in and sat on the couch, before pulling out the brave little toaster. “So, I know you said that you had something picked out. But look what I found. I thought you might change your mind if bought it. So, do you want to watch it?”

“I… Uh…” Finn knew he should say no. He had already picked out a badass action movie that was in no way childish at all. This was supposed to be the first step towards showing Rayne that they could do more than just the things they used to do when Finn was little. But Rayne looked so hopeful. And Finn so badly didn’t want that hope to turn to disappointment when he turned down his suggestion. So in the end, he ended up saying, “okay.”

Finn put in the movie and they watched in companionable silence. Finn actually did like the movie and it brought up a lot of fond nostalgia, but he felt like he had lost. This was not how the night was supposed to go. Finn said goodbye to Rayne with less energy than he normally did and tried to cover up his distress with a smile. He hoped it worked, he didn’t want Rayne to think that he didn’t like spending time with him.

“How did movie night go?” Max asked when Rayne came back to their dorm.

“Great.” Rayne gave a small smile to Max as he walked to his room.

Max smiled back at him, “I’m glad.”
